Juana Maria Diaz Y Medina was born around 1910 in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico, to Santos Diaz Y Rodriguez and Rosa Medina Y Lopez de Diaz. [1] Juana was the sixth of 9 children born to her parents, who were married in 1895.[2] Her siblings were Tomás, Villa, Luis,Juan, Engracia, Encarnacion, Bacilio and Santiago. Her father Santos, a farmer with his own spread, died when Juana was only 6 years old. [3] They must have lost the farm, because by the 1920 census, her three older brothers were working as farm hands to support their 5 young siblings. [4].
According to her sister-in-law, Higinia Rosario, Juana was married to Antonio and they had no children. Her niece, Rosa Maria Diaz, also recalls Aunt Juana was married with no children--and also remembers her aunt's kindness. Juan' Diaz's family didn't approve of his marriage to Higinia. The Rosarios were darker-skinned than the Diaz family, who liked to claim they could trace their lineage to Spain. Juana was the exception in the family who took pains to be kind to Juan's children and get to know them and Rosa has fond memories of playing in her home and being showered with love by her aunt.
